EXHIBITION
Dry Ocean Collective
Exhibition part of
Partcours at Musée Théodore Monod, IFAN
Rue Place 18, Dakar, Plateau (Senegal)
02.-16.12.2023,  Opening 1.12., 16 h
Dry Ocean defines itself as a transcultural collective of artists and researchers exploring ideas of relationality and plurality. Through the ambiguity of its name, the collective challenges notions of opposition, stability and boundaries, singing instead of the incessant rise and fall of the tides and the rhythmic sound of waves as they wash ashore. By emphasising a constant becoming rather than the fixation of things in shape, space and time, Dry Ocean accepts the fact of processual movement in ist own formation and understands the creative process as organic. The jointly conceived artworks and presentations are perceived by its members as extracts from certain shared experiences, which in turn can trigger new experiences and thus lead to new episodes of Dry Ocean. In this second episode, entitled 'The Opening', Dry Ocean will for the first time present collectively conceived works in progress in public space.
Dry Ocean was founded in 2021 with Katja Aufleger, Aliou "Badou" Diack, Ibaaku, Selly Raby Kane, Fabian Knecht, Jeewi Lee, Ana Lessing Menjibar, Ibrahima Thiam, Agnes Stillger, Nathalie Vairac

With the generous support from Goethe Institut and Kemmler Foundation

PERFORMANCE
Show your Wound at
Kunstverein Reutlingen
For the finissage of Vera Kox exhibition “...into deliquescence”, the artist invites Ana Lessing Menjibar to stage her performance Show Your Wound

Show Your Wound is a choreographic and sonic performance by Ana Lessing Menjibar that exposes the emotional and physical fragility of the human body in a near-posthuman world. In dialogue with musicians Philipp Kullen and Nikola Pieper, the artist interweaves bodies, worlds of sound and language into a performance that examines the poetic potential of various physical states, from formal to ecstatic. In her deconstruction of traditional flamenco, she works with sculptural objects as an extension of her dance practice to investigate questions about wounds and healing, the collective body, and processes of transformation.

The dance performance will extend across the exhibition space and enter into a dialogue with the sculptures and installations by Vera Kox. The works of the two artists share an innovative and experimental approach that considers the body as fluid and examines the dissolution of the boundaries between matter/body and the environment.

13.9.2020 / 20 h

Perpetual Archive
In the first part of the evening, Ana Lessing Menjibar shows her latest performance "Perpetual Archive“. Between an ecstatic and formal investigation, Ana Lessing Menjibar experiments with a cultural legacy gathered from her flamenco background. She opens this archive to reveal a series of states, creatures and concepts of spaces. This journey includes a digital and energetic feedback loop, a vulnerable dialogue of inner and outer bodily sounds and rhythms. In a hybrid space somewhere between installation and the black box theatre, Lessing Menjibar’s research decomposes flamenco to transform it within the field of performance art.

Concept, Choreography, Performance:  Ana Lessing Menjibar
Music Composition: Ana Lessing Menjibar & Philipp Kullen

Dramaturgy: Vera Fenyvesi Köppern

Colores
In the second part of the evening, Ana Lessing Menjibar brings together her long-time Berlin flamenco colleagues. A flamenco evening with the dancer and choreographer Bella Paloma, the singer Juan Cárdenas, the guitarist "El Rizos" and the percussionist Philipp Kullen. In "Colores" they come together to indulge in the different colours of flamenco, in which Bella Paloma's dance forms a bridge between the traditions of flamenco and contemporary dance.

(Int)eruption. The Idea of a Second Heart.

A research presentation by Ana Lessing Menjibar in collaboration with Philipp Kullen (Sound); Vera Köppern (Dramaturgic Advisor); Paul Snowden (Space), Silke Faber (Costume) and Thorsten Kosellek (Light Advisor); and with the support of Angela Schubot (Mentor), Nik Haffner (Mentor) and Rhys Martin (Tutor).
Inside the womb, we start to hear at the age of 4 months. We hear the sounds of our mother’s body: the pumping of her blood, the tide of her breath, the murmur of her bowels, her heartbeat. We feel them vibrating through our entire body. Once we become a single body, the first thing we miss is the rhythm- the rhythm of a second body.
Then we grow into our own inner multitude of rhythms, orchestrating the rhythms of our walking, dancing, speaking, laughing and crying. Our rhythms constantly encounter with those of the outside world, of spaces we inhabit, of our relationships and politics. We coexist with them and tune our bodies to them.
And sometimes, those rhythms clash.

A Collaborative Effort created and performed by Mineralwasser Kollektiv in SODA WORKS 2018-Ana Lessing Menjibar, Bernardo Chatillon, Jason Corff, Jorge De Hoyos, Kuba Borkowicz, Minna Partanen, Rhyannon Styles-“There are no questions.Yesterday we had an image of us at a dinner party: 20 people, 4 courses, 15 musical cues. In the middle we all started to explore collaboration. Jason was clear about it. Minna was clearer, and Bernardo clarified that it’s a meeting in space.
…around a shapeshifting turntable we turned hesitation into heartbeats, proposals into sweat, claims and disclaimers into low tech special effects.
I can’t speak for the others; we can’t speak for each other–the shapes keep humming into the mic (someone almost started crying in a coffee shop looking at their notes…or so they wrote in their notes). We need porosity.
Come.
See us detect what is the process of coming together. And that is valuable in itself.”
